Basti: Cleansing & Nourishing the Colon
Basti is considered the "mother of all Ayurvedic therapies" because it directly regulates **Vata Dosha**, which resides in the colon and is the prime mover of all biological processes and pain pathways. Rather than a simple evacuation purge, Basti is a highly sophisticated system of enema therapies that feed and repair tissues directly through the colon walls.
Clinical Indications
- Skeletal and Joint issues (Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, gout).
- Spine and Nerve compressions (Sciatica, slip disc, lumbar spondylosis, hemiplegia).
- Digestive issues (Chronic constipation, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome).
- Neurological disorders (Insomnia, anxiety, chronic fatigue, tremors).
The Dual Basti Modalities
To balance Vata, Basti is typically administered in alternating cycles of two distinct enema types:
1. Anuvasana Basti (Oil-Based)
Administered in small quantities using warm, medicated oils (like Sahacharadi or Dhanwantaram tailam). It remains in the colon to lubricate tissues, soothe Vata nerves, and build skeletal bone strength.
2. Niruha Basti (Decoction-Based)
Administered using a warm emulsion of honey, rock salt, herbal pastes, and decoctions (Kashaya). It cleanses the colon lining, drawing out systemic cellular toxins and gas blockages.
The Step-by-Step Basti Procedure
-
1
Purva Karma (Preparation)
The patient receives a light meal first (Basti is never given on an empty stomach for oil enemas). The lower abdomen, back, and hips are massaged with warm herbal oils and steamed locally to relax the pelvic floor.
-
2
Pradhana Karma (Administration)
The patient lies on their left side. Using a sterile, customized disposible nozzle, the warm medicated oil or decoction is gently introduced. The patient takes slow, deep breaths to avoid muscle contractions.
-
3
Paschat Karma (Post-Procedure Rest)
The patient lies on their back while their heels and palms are lightly tapped to stimulate retention. Once the urge arises, the enema is expelled, carrying away accumulated waste. The patient rests and takes warm water.
