Nasya: Purifying the Head and Sensory Organs

Nasya is the fourth primary Panchakarma procedure. It involves administering warm, medicated herbal drops through the nasal passage, which is recognized in Ayurveda as the "gateway to the brain." Nasya clears lymphatic blocks, balances hormones, and rejuvenates upper neck organs.

Clinical Indications

  • Sinus and Head congestion (Chronic sinusitis, nasal blocks, allergic rhinitis).
  • Headaches & Neurological issues (Migraines, tension headaches, facial palsy, neuralgia).
  • Hormonal imbalances (Thyroid issues, pituitary regulations).
  • Upper spine & sensory conditions (Cervical stiffness, premature hair loss, dry eyes).

The Step-by-Step Nasya Procedure

  • 1

    Purva Karma (Preparation)

The patient lies on a comfortable table with their head tilted slightly backward. The face, neck, and chest are gently massaged with warm herbal oil, followed by localized steam focusing on the forehead, nose, and cheekbones to dilate sinus cavities.

  • 2

    Pradhana Karma (Infiltration)

Specific warm herbal oil (such as Anu Tailam or Shadbindu Tailam) or herbal juices are gently dropped into each nostril sequentially. The patient is asked to sniff deeply while closing the other nostril, guiding the drops toward the head channels.

  • 3

    Paschat Karma (Post-Procedure Cleansing)

The oil mobilizes mucus, which accumulates in the throat. The patient is instructed to spit out all secretions (swallowing is prohibited). The soles and palms are lightly massaged, and the patient gargles with warm saline water.
