Raktamokshana: Purifying Venous Blood Channels

Raktamokshana is the fifth primary purification therapy of Panchakarma. It is specifically designed to eliminate accumulated toxins (Dushi Visha) from the bloodstream (Rakta Dhatu). By releasing stagnant, impure venous blood from localized areas, it stimulates cell regeneration, cools tissues, and clears skin lesions.

Clinical Indications

  • Vascular conditions (Varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis, localized blood congestion).
  • Inflammatory skin diseases (Eczema, chronic psoriasis, severe cystic acne, hives).
  • Local swelling & toxicity (Gouty arthritis joints, non-healing ulcers, insect bite toxins).
  • Alopecia areata (severe localized hair patch loss).

Common Modalities Practiced at Sparsh

Jalaukavacharana (Leech Therapy)

The gentlest method, ideal for delicate skin conditions or joints. Medicated, clinical leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) are applied locally. As they suck congested blood, their saliva secretes bioactive compounds like hirudin (natural blood thinner) and anti-inflammatories that resolve vascular blocks.

Siravyadha (Venesection)

A precise venous puncture using sterile needles to release a controlled amount of toxic blood. Ideal for systemic blood-borne disorders or wide-spread skin lesions.

The Step-by-Step Leech Therapy Procedure

  • 1

    Purva Karma (Preparation)

The skin area is cleaned using warm sterile water (no soap or chemical disinfectants, as leeches will refuse to bite). Leeches are purified in turmeric water to activate them.

  • 2

    Pradhana Karma (Application)

The leech is placed on the target area. Once it bites (feels like a light prick), it is covered with a damp cotton cloth. It sucks blood for 30 to 45 minutes, expanding in size, and falls off naturally when finished.

  • 3

    Paschat Karma (Post-Care)

The bite site is cleaned with turmeric water to prevent infections. Since leech saliva thins blood, light bleeding may continue for a few hours. A sterile tight cotton bandage mixed with turmeric and licorice powder is applied to stop bleeding and aid healing.
