The Step-by-Step Virechana Procedure

Purva Karma (Preparatory Phase - 5 to 7 Days)
Includes Snehapana (daily intake of medicated ghee in increasing quantities) to pull fat-soluble toxins from tissues into the gut. Followed by 3 days of body massage (Abhyanga) and steam (Swedana) to dilate channels and liquify toxins.

Pradhana Karma (Main Purgation Day)
Medicated laxatives like Trivrit Lehyam, castor oil, or milk formulations are administered under Vaidya supervision. Controlled bowel movements occur over 4-6 hours, clearing the liver and gut pathways. The patient is monitored continuously for pulse, hydration, and clean bowel discharge.

Paschat Karma (Post-Dietary Recovery)
Rigid dietary stage (Samsarjana Krama) to gradually rebuild weak digestion (Agni). Simple warm rice gruel, green gram soup, and light vegetable broth are taken sequentially over 3 to 5 days before resuming heavy solid meals.
